Territorial cohesion from within: bridging metropolitan communities and economies for a harmonized and integrated territory that enhances the potential of socio-ecological systems in establishing urban-rural synergies

Lisbon Living Lab

The Lisbon Metropolitan Area (LMA) with a population of over 2.8 million, a GDPpc of € 23,614, and accounting for 30% of national exports and 42% of knowledge-based goods exports, is one of the largest LLs in ROBUST. Diverse in resources and landscapes, high-density territories exist next to places where rural values and primary sector activities still prevail, creating tensions at times, but also harmony. The LMA is an important historic European capital and port where a mix of cultures, aesthetic and natural features are visible (e.g. Tagus River and Tagus Estuary Natural Reserve, the largest estuary in western Europe).

Led by the Lisbon Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR-LVT) and Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), the Lisbon Living Lab will collaborate with local stakeholders, like the municipalities of Mafra and Setúbal, Lisbon Supply Market (MARL), ICNF, A2S, Wine Institute, Regional Directorate of Agriculture of Lisbon and Tagus Valley, and Aldeia da Mata Pequena. Together, they will explore how urban-rural linkages can help transform rural and urban economies and communities. The Living Lab will also look at mutual dependencies, competitive or synergistic relationships, networks and flows across territories, describe institutional policy contexts and influences, and build on local assets to improve adaptation and resilience to global changes.
